While the summertime is a great time to enjoy playing in the pool and lounging on the lawn, it can be a little less fun for our pets. Keep your pet cool with these useful tips!

FREEZE SODA BOTTLES

Soda bottles can be a small companion’s best friend! If you have one or two lying around, wash them out, fill them with water, and freeze them. Once they’re frozen, put them in your pet’s cage. They’ll lie down next to them whenever they need to cool off.

Small species are inclined to chew on new items that are added to their environment. Make sure to monitor your pet to ensure that they don’t chew the plastic. Remove the bottles should this occur.

CERAMIC TILES

Did you know that ceramic tiles (marble tiles also work) can stay cool to the touch after you remove them from the refrigerator? Make sure that they don’t crack or break, then place them in your pet’s favorite spot to rest and relax.

MIST YOUR BUNS’ EARS

Rabbits dissipate heat through their ears. Lightly misting them or dampening a soft towel and putting them against your rabbit’s ears will keep your bunny comfortable.

CIRCULATING FAN

Using a circulating fan is a great way to ensure that small animals don’t overheat or have cold air blown on them all day. Oxbow recommends slowly introducing a fan to your pet, as prey animals tend to be particularly sensitive to changes in their environment. The quieter the fan, the better.

AVOID THE SUN

We always recommend keeping your pet’s cage out of the sun, but this is especially important during the summertime. Pick a shady spot in your home where your pet can relax away from the warm rays.

BRUSH YOUR PET

Brushing your pet regularly will help to remove excessive fur that can lead to over-heating.
